Step Indexing & Custom Bank Cutting
When a reference book needs its sections stepped so every tab shows at once, the cutting has to be exact. We step-index from 1 to 15 banks, on equipment ranging from automated Scott lines to hand systems for stock a machine would bruise.
What step indexing is
Step indexing cuts a bound set so each section's edge steps progressively deeper into the page — the classic cascading look of dictionaries, code books, parts catalogs, and pilot manuals. Every tab position is visible simultaneously, and the cut depth must be consistent to the sheet.
Our capability
- 1 to 15 banks — from a single bank to fifteen-bank cascades
- Any stock we can cut — index, cover, coated text, poly, and specialty substrates
- Automated Scott lines for high-volume runs; hand systems for short runs and delicate or padded stock
- Custom steel-rule dies cut in-house — new step layouts don't wait on an outside die maker
- Pairs with our trade bindery services: collate, reinforce, punch, and step in one plant
Common questions
How many banks can you step-index?
From 1 to 15 banks. Common orders run 3 to 8 banks; deeper cascades are laid out and confirmed by our estimators before production.
Can you step-index stock we print ourselves?
Yes — trade printers regularly send printed, bound, or padded stock for step indexing and bank cutting. Automated lines handle volume; hand systems handle delicate work.
Do you make the dies?
Yes, custom steel-rule dies are produced in-house — it's the 'Die' in Anselmo Die & Index. New layouts don't wait on an outside supplier.
Estimates same day on most trade work — no charge until you approve a proof.
